Playing cards

Playing cards Believed to have originated in ancient China, playing cards came to Europe via the Islamic Empire c.1380.

The contemporary 52-card pack evolved from a 16th-century French design.

Designs gradually became more decorative and many idiosyncratic packs were produced in England in the 17th and 18th centuries.

In the 19th century, Germany and Austria became the chief producers.
