Antiques for Everyone Report

Last week was very busy, what with the London Book Fair and a Feedback meeting with the Antiques Roadshow team at BBC TV Centre. It is amazing to think we start filming our new series on 26th April in Cheltenham.
All of this has meant that I haven’t had time to blog about Antiques For Everyone! It goes without saying that the fair was very enjoyable and it was great to spend time with so many of my friends in the antiques business, particularly Mark Hill. For two days Mark and I were also joined by my great friend from Octopus Publishing, Tracey Smith, who was kind enough to travel up f ... Read this full article on the Miller's Blog.

The Spring Antiques for Everyone fair is only two weeks away and I’m really looking forward to it already!
It’s always a wonderful fair, but this year is going to be quite special. I’ve been told that the central area of the exhibition will be devoted to a special Downton Abbey inspired feature, which will include a dramatic period home and room set showcasing furniture and art from the early 1900s. The rest of the massive hall will, as always, be filled with a wide array of items, ranging from £20 kitchenalia right through to works of fine art worth well over £1 ... Read this full article on the Miller's Blog.

New Exhibition at the Silver Vaults

I was very excited to receive an email this morning about the newest selling exhibition at the London Silver Vaults in Chancery Lane. Entitled ‘Post War Winners: 60 Years of British Silver’ the exhibition will focus on the work of smiths such as Gerald Benney, Stuart Devlin and Robert Welch and features pieces from all thirty shops located within the vaults.
You may know by now that one of the two books I’m working on at the moment is about Mid-Century Modern design. Obviously, we discuss all these smiths, but there’s a particular focus on Devlin, who has, I think, des ... Read this full article on the Miller's Blog.

This time last week I was getting ready to lecture at Woburn Abbey Antiques Centre, which I must say went very well indeed. The group I was talking to was lively and Woburn is a really good place to go if you’re interested in antiques. As well as boasting an excellent standard of antiques, Woburn’s dealers are all friendly and have a very high level of expertise.
I was also able to meet up with one of my friends from the Antiques Roadshow, John Bly. John has a shop within the antiques centre and often gives lectures there. In fact, he’s doing another one on ‘Dining wit ... Read this full article on the Miller's Blog.

We’re experiencing a (very small!) lull in our two new book projects at the moment, so I thought I would take the time to update my blog. Once again, I’m sorry for being so silent recently. Hopefully I’ll get up to speed with the blog again soon and, when the books come out, you’ll agree it was all worth it.
Last Thursday I had the pleasure of attending the Bath Decorative Arts Fair. It’s always a wonderful experience that I really look forward to. It’s a great opportunity to meet up with old friends and plays host to a wide range of objects for all price r ... Read this full article on the Miller's Blog.

The blog has been quiet for a while as we work on our two new books, but I had to stop and blog about our new ‘Collectables Handbook’, which is officially out today!
Mark and I have worked even harder than usual this year, and produced what I think is a brilliant book. Like the 2012-2013 Antiques Handbook & Price Guide (available here in the UK and here in the US), it has a great new design and is packed with special features, including the all new ‘Judith Picks’ and ‘Mark Picks’. As well as all the sections you’d expect, this year special b ... Read this full article on the Miller's Blog.

We're running a competition over at Twitter at the moment to celebrate our 2,000th tweet and 1000th follower!
All you need to do to enter is re-tweet (either using RT @millersantiques or by clicking the re-tweet button) that 2,000th tweet before 4pm GMT today. That will enter you automatically into a competition to win one of three first prizes of 'Miller's Antiques Price Guide 2009', 'Miller's Antiques Price Guide 2010-2011', and a brand new copy of 'Millers Antiques Price Guide 2012-2013', which I have signed. There are also two second prizes up for grabs, and that includes the 2009 and 201 ... Read this full article on the Miller's Blog.

A Sad Story...

I first became interested in antiques when I was a poor student. Fortunately my tastes varied then as much as they do now, and I was as interested in things I could afford as I was in the things that were well beyond my league. While at university I built up a large collection of 17th-19thC blue and white hand-painted and transfer-printed plates without spending more than a few pennies. Some of the plates I bought then are still only worth a few pennies, but quite a few have greatly increased in value.

Now, I don’t believe in buying antiques in order to make money, but that doesn&rsq ... Read this full article on the Miller's Blog.

Yesterday I had a long series of (very productive) meetings about a book we’re doing, and then headed to Spalding. As with the event at Guisborough, I was there to sign books, and talk about some items that people had brought in. And what a lot of wonderful things the people of Spalding brought for me to see!

There was a very wide variety of objects, ranging from several 19th century Chinese ivory carvings to Staffordshire pottery. Somebody brought along a brilliant 19th century ironstone cup, which had a grotesque animal handle. Then there was the sad story of an incredible 16in (40 ... Read this full article on the Miller's Blog.

National Antiques Week - An Update

In between a train journey back from a very successful signing in Guisborough and a great radio interview with Radio Lincolnshire, I managed to catch up with the deputy editor of Homes & Antiques magazine, Natasha Goodfellow. Naturally our conversation soon turned to National Antiques Week and the Britain’s Best Antiques Shops campaign, which Homes & Antiques are running in association with Antiques News & Fairs.

Natasha was kind enough to give me a bit of behind the scenes information about how the competition came about:
'We came up with the idea back in spring. In the ... Read this full article on the Miller's Blog.
