A very rare 16 bore Breech loading self capping enclosed hammer Boxlock percussion rifle, by E Garside, Ashton under Lyne, dated 1853, with hinged rammer lever on left side and holder for the cap dispensing magazine on the right; the external cocking lever releases the breech chamber allowing it to swivel sideways for loading, and which has a small venting nipple in the top and a large integral thumb piece engraved "E Garside, Ashton-under-Lyne, 1853"; the action of revolving the breech transfers a cap from the magazine (now missing) to the hammer nose automatically by means of a cam and crank; darkened beechwood butt with chequered wrist and plain steel mounts; GWO & C (dark Patina overall with some Pitting). 51in (130cm) overall
